Why this exists

mokrip was built by Murpho - living with Secondary-Progressive MS and the heat intolerance that comes with it - to find the safe windows for walking the family Basenjis, Ripli and Moké.

Heat and humidity can worsen MS symptoms - a hot, muggy day is harder on a body that can't cool itself well, even when the temperature alone looks fine. Leans on dew point as a determining factor, not just temperature. Dew Point is the truest measure of how hard it is for the body to shed heat

The goal is avoiding Uhthoff's phenomenon - a temporary flare of neurological symptoms that heat can trigger in minutes and that can linger for hours. It's just as useful for anyone heat-sensitive, and for the dogs, whose paws and cooling face the same day you do.

How the mokrip heat load number works: two things drive it - how much heat you're taking on (air temp, plus direct sun), and how well your body can shed it (dew point, eased a little by wind). Heat and humidity don't just add together - they multiply. A muggy day at 90° is far worse than a dry day at 90°, because sweat can't evaporate in thick air, and that's exactly when the score climbs fastest.

The Go/Wait/Stop cutoffs are calibrated to Murpho's own walks, tracked over time. If you're using this and your heat tolerance differs, watch the dew point and heat load numbers directly for a few weeks and see where your own line is, rather than trusting the verdict word alone.

Recommendations are conservative starting points, not medical advice. Trust your own body and judgment.
